Best hosting for a staging environment in 2026: cheap and disposable
Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.
A staging environment is a copy of production that you can break without customers noticing. It should be cheap enough to spin up and tear down freely, close enough to production in shape that a bug on staging is likely to also show up on production, and boring enough that you never have to think about it. That's an under-$10 VPS running the same stack as production.
Prices as of 2026-09-22.
What a staging environment actually needs
- Similar OS and stack to production. Same Ubuntu version, same PHP or Python, same database engine.
- Enough RAM to run the app. Not the same size as production; just enough that the app boots and serves.
- Cheap. You shouldn't feel expensive to leave it running.
- Isolated. Not on production hardware, not sharing a database with production.
Recommended picks
Standard staging ($4.60-8/mo)
Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo — 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM. Runs almost any app. Best price. Best answer.
Staging that mirrors production infrastructure
Match your production provider. If production is DigitalOcean, staging on the same DO ($6-12/mo for small tiers). This eliminates "it worked in staging but the DO firewall rules are different" bugs.
Managed staging environment on Cloudways / Kinsta
Both include one-click staging environments as part of the managed offering. No extra hosting cost — it's a feature of your managed plan.
- Cloudways: one-click staging on every plan, no extra fee.
- Kinsta: one-click staging on every plan, no extra fee.
If you're on managed WordPress hosting, use the built-in staging. Don't pay for a separate staging VPS.
Ephemeral staging (per-branch, cost-per-use)
Some teams create a fresh staging environment for every pull request and destroy it when the PR merges. Fly.io Machines, Railway, and DigitalOcean App Platform support this pattern. Priced per resource-hour; typically $0.50-2 per PR.
Not our category to price directly; useful pattern for larger teams.
The "staging is just prod without traffic" pattern
The cleanest staging setup:
1. Same host provider as production.
2. Same OS, same stack versions.
3. Half the resources of production (staging on Basic 2 GB if prod is Basic 4 GB).
4. Same deployment process — same Git branch strategy, same CI/CD workflow, same secrets store.
5. Fresh database seeded from a sanitised production dump.
The "sanitised production dump" is the hard part. Automate it: nightly, take a production pg_dump, run a script that scrubs PII (email, phone, addresses replaced with fake values), restore to staging.
What NOT to do
- Don't use production's database from staging. One
TRUNCATE usersin a staging query console will ruin your day. - Don't run staging on the same host as production. If staging crashes production because they share memory, staging failed at its one job.
- Don't skimp on the OS version. "Staging is on Ubuntu 22.04 but prod is on 24.04" is how PHP-extension bugs slip through.
- Don't leave staging without SSL. OAuth callbacks, cookie behaviour, and CORS all care about HTTPS. Certbot is free.
Which one you should actually pick
- Cost-first, standalone staging → Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo. Fine.
- Mirror production, production is DO → DO Basic 2 GB at $12/mo.
- Mirror production, production is Vultr → Vultr Regular 2 GB at $10/mo.
- You're already on Cloudways/Kinsta → use the built-in staging. Don't pay for a separate box.
- Ephemeral per-PR staging → Fly.io Machines or DO App Platform.
