The cheapest VPS in 2026 under $10/month: 12 real options ranked

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

There are twelve VPS plans on the market from the major cloud and infrastructure providers that come in under $10 a month. Some of them are excellent value. Some of them are old marketing sizing that no serious workload should touch. This guide names all of them, ranks them by what you actually get for the money, and tells you which ones we would actually run production traffic on.

All prices are the provider's own list price on-demand, in USD, verified on 2026-09-22.

Fourteen plans, but the interesting story is not that there are cheap options — it's how uneven they are.

The best VPS under $10 for real work

Hetzner CX32 at $7.60/mo — 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, 20 TB transfer.

There is no other plan on this list that gives you the resources to run a real production application at $7.60. At that price the closest competitors are Contabo Cloud VPS 4 ($7.79, similar shape) and OVHcloud VPS-2 ($8.50, similar shape). Everything else in this bracket is 1 vCPU, 1-2 GB of RAM and is only suitable for a hobby project, a Discord bot, or a personal blog with very light traffic.

If your workload actually needs to serve requests under any real concurrency, don't buy a 1 GB plan just because it's $5. Buy an 8 GB Hetzner plan for $7.60.

The best VPS under $5 (the hobbyist tier)

Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo — 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, 20 TB transfer.

Cheaper than DigitalOcean and Linode's 1 GB plans, with 4x the RAM and 2x the vCPUs. This has been the correct answer for a "cheap VPS for a small project" question since 2020 and it still is in 2026. OVHcloud VPS-1 undercuts it by 6 cents, but Hetzner's quantified transfer allowance (20 TB vs OVH's "unmetered but throttled") makes it the safer pick if you plan to do anything network-heavy.

If you specifically need a datacenter in North America or Asia-Pacific and can't use Hetzner's smaller US footprint (Ashburn, Hillsboro) or OVH's slightly wider one, you'll have to pay the DigitalOcean, Vultr or Linode markup: $5-6/mo for a 1 GB plan.

The best VPS under $10 for a WordPress site

Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo for an unmanaged WordPress on Nginx or Apache, or Cloudways DO 1 GB (managed) at $14/mo for a managed one. There is nothing in the $5-10 tier that is genuinely well-shaped for a WordPress site: the DigitalOcean, Linode and AWS Lightsail 1 GB plans will run WP but a couple of plugins will exhaust the memory. The Hetzner CX22, with 4 GB, is fine for WP + WooCommerce + a moderate plugin load.

We have a dedicated best hosting for a WordPress site guide that goes into managed vs unmanaged trade-offs in detail.

Plans on this list we would NOT recommend

AWS Lightsail General 512 MB at $5/mo. 512 MB of RAM is not enough to run anything modern in production. Node.js, Python, Ruby and PHP-FPM all use more than that at idle. The plan exists for backwards compatibility. Skip.

DigitalOcean Basic 1 GB, Vultr Regular 1 GB, Linode Nanode 1 GB, Vultr HF 1 GB — all $5–6/mo, all 1 vCPU / 1 GB. These are perfectly fine boxes and the providers behind them are excellent. But at 4x the price per GB of RAM compared to Hetzner CX22, we do not think a small side project deserves 1 GB when 4 GB is $4.60. The only case for picking one of these over a Hetzner CX22 is a hard regional requirement Hetzner cannot meet.

Vultr High Frequency 1 GB at $6/mo. The high-frequency tier is genuinely faster (3.7+ GHz sustained), but at 1 GB it can't leverage that. If you specifically need HF speed at low cost, wait until you can buy the HF 4 GB.

The cost-per-unit view

The single most useful frame for a cheap-VPS comparison is not the sticker price. It's the cost per gigabyte of RAM. RAM is the resource that runs out first on every small-scale application; vCPU is almost always over-provisioned relative to actual load.

Plan Price GB RAM $/GB RAM
Hetzner CX32 $7.60 8 $0.95
Contabo Cloud VPS 4 $7.79 8 $0.97
OVHcloud VPS-2 $8.50 8 $1.06
Hetzner CX22 $4.60 4 $1.15
OVHcloud VPS-1 $4.54 4 $1.14
UpCloud Starter 2 GB $6.48 2 $3.24
Hetzner CPX11 $5.20 2 $2.60
DigitalOcean Basic 1 GB $6.00 1 $6.00
Linode Nanode 1 GB $5.00 1 $5.00
Vultr Regular 1 GB $5.00 1 $5.00
Vultr HF 1 GB $6.00 1 $6.00
AWS Lightsail 1 GB $7.00 1 $7.00
AWS Lightsail 512 MB $5.00 0.5 $10.00
UpCloud Starter 1 GB $3.24 1 $3.24

Hetzner CX32 wins per GB of RAM by a real margin. If you had a budget of $10/mo and wanted to maximise the resources the box can actually run, you would buy the CX32 and have $2.40 in change.

Where "cheap" costs you more than it saves

Two categories of cost aren't on the sticker price:

Managed-service premium. A $6 DigitalOcean Droplet plus your own time managing it is not the same as a $14 Cloudways plan managing the same Droplet for you. If your time is worth $50/hour and stack management takes you two hours a month, the "cheap" DO plan costs $106/mo of your time; the "expensive" Cloudways plan costs $14 of Cloudways' time.

Bandwidth overage. UpCloud's Starter 1 GB at $3.24 is the cheapest sticker price on this list, but bandwidth is metered per GB and can exceed the base plan cost quickly on a site with real traffic. Hetzner's 20 TB / $0.60 per TB over is much friendlier if there is any chance your site could go viral for a day.

Which one you should actually pick

  • Bootstrapping a new SaaS or side project, need real headroom → Hetzner CX32 at $7.60/mo.
  • Just a Discord bot, personal blog, home Postgres → Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo.
  • Need US regions Hetzner doesn't cover → DigitalOcean Basic 1 GB at $6/mo, or Vultr Regular 1 GB at $5/mo. Both fine; both regionally strong; both twice the price per GB of RAM.
  • Need a managed WordPress stack → Cloudways at $14/mo (which is above the $10 line, but is the honest answer if you actually want the managed layer).
  • Optimising per gigabyte of NVMe storage → Contabo Cloud VPS 4 at $7.79/mo, with 100 GB.
