Best hosting for a Discord bot in 2026: the tiny cheap answer

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

Discord bots are one of the friendliest workloads to host. Most Discord bots do essentially nothing 99% of the time — they wait on a WebSocket connection to receive events, and handle a message once every few seconds. RAM usage is tiny (50-200 MB for a bot in a hundred servers). CPU is barely used. Any VPS runs a Discord bot.

What a Discord bot actually needs

  • A persistent process. Node.js, Python, Go, Rust — doesn't matter. Wrap it in systemd or Docker.
  • Reliable network. Discord's WebSocket disconnects annoy your users; a stable VPS is more useful than a fast one.
  • RAM: 512 MB is enough for most bots. 1 GB is comfortable. Bots in 10,000+ servers use ~500 MB steady state.
  • vCPU: 1 is fine, 2 is future-proof.
  • Storage: 25 GB is more than enough. Bot code + logs + maybe a small SQLite.
  • A tiny database (SQLite for personal, Postgres for multi-thousand-server bots). Both fit on the same VPS.

Recommended picks

Personal / small server bot (the answer for 90% of Discord bots)

Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo — 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, 20 TB transfer.

Massive overkill in a good way. Runs your bot forever with room for a few side projects on the same box.

Alternative under $10: OVHcloud VPS-1 at $4.54/mo (identical shape at Hetzner's price minus regional coverage).

Multi-server public bot (10,000+ guilds)

Hetzner CX32 at $7.60/mo — 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM.

Or DigitalOcean Basic 2 GB at $12/mo if you specifically need US regions.

Bots with heavy media processing (music bots, image bots)

Hetzner CPX31 at $15.60/mo — 4 AMD vCPU, 8 GB RAM. Music bot audio processing is CPU-bound.

Alternative: Vultr High Frequency 2 GB at $12/mo (approx; verify at vultr.com/pricing) for faster single-thread performance.

Cost-first, single-purpose bot

UpCloud Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo. Cheapest sticker. Watch the metered bandwidth (most bots don't hit it).

systemd service for a Node.js Discord bot

/etc/systemd/system/mybot.service:

```
[Unit]
Description=My Discord bot
After=network.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=botuser
WorkingDirectory=/home/botuser/mybot
ExecStart=/usr/bin/node index.js
Restart=always
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
```

systemctl enable --now mybot. Done. Bot restarts on crash, restarts on reboot.

For Python:

```
ExecStart=/home/botuser/mybot/venv/bin/python bot.py
```

Docker-based deployment

If you prefer Docker:

```yaml
services:
bot:
image: node:20-slim
working_dir: /app
volumes:
  • ./:/app
command: node index.js
restart: unless-stopped
env_file: .env
```

docker compose up -d. Auto-restart on crash and on host reboot.

Common Discord bot hosting mistakes

  • Buying AWS Lightsail's 512 MB plan. Bandwidth overage on Lightsail is $0.09/GB — a music bot streaming a few hours generates real fees.
  • Running the bot on pm2 start from a home laptop. Fine for development. Terrible for production because your laptop closes.
  • Running on the free tier of a PaaS. Free tiers often kill your process during idle. Discord considers your bot offline.
  • Not persisting the database. SQLite in /tmp disappears on reboot. Store data in /var/lib/mybot/db.sqlite.

The cheapest legitimate answer

If you want the absolute cheapest reliable Discord bot host with a real datacenter: UpCloud Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo.

The 4x cheaper-per-GB answer for anything above trivial usage: Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo.

Which one you should actually pick

  • Personal bot → Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo. Overbuys for the workload; you'll use the headroom for something else.
  • Public bot in a few thousand servers → Hetzner CX22 or CX32.
  • Music bot → Hetzner CPX31 or Vultr HF for the single-thread performance.
  • Cost-first, tiny bot → UpCloud Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo.
  • You want the DO ecosystem for other services → DigitalOcean Basic 1 GB at $6/mo.
