Hetzner Cloud in 2026: strengths, weaknesses, hidden costs (pricing analysis)

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

Hetzner Cloud has been the developer community's cost-first VPS pick for over five years running. This is the pricing analysis — what Hetzner is genuinely great at, where it falls short, and the small hidden costs that don't show on the pricing page.

Prices as of 2026-09-22.

The one-paragraph verdict

Hetzner Cloud is the best cost-per-unit-resource cloud VPS on the market for I/O-bound workloads in EU or US-East/US-West regions. Genuinely. The pricing is real, the operational track record is strong, the developer tooling is first-class. What it isn't: a full cloud ecosystem, a global CDN provider, a managed-services shop, or a US-South/APAC/LATAM winner. If you don't need what it doesn't have, buy it.

The plans, honestly

Plan Price vCPU RAM Storage Transfer
CX22 $4.60 2 (Intel) 4 GB 40 GB NVMe 20 TB
CPX11 $5.20 2 (AMD) 2 GB 40 GB 20 TB
CX32 $7.60 4 (Intel) 8 GB 80 GB NVMe 20 TB
CPX31 $15.60 4 (AMD) 8 GB 160 GB NVMe 20 TB
CX52 ~$28 8 (Intel) 32 GB 240 GB 20 TB
CCX13 (dedicated AMD) ~$14 2 8 GB 80 GB 20 TB
CCX23 (dedicated AMD) ~$32 4 16 GB 160 GB 20 TB

Every plan gets 20 TB of monthly transfer. That's not a typo. 20 TB. The overage rate is €1 per TB after that.

Strengths

Price. Nothing on the market beats Hetzner per unit of RAM or per unit of vCPU throughput at their entry tiers. Contabo undercuts slightly on sticker but loses on CPU consistency. Hetzner's winning combination is honest.

Bandwidth allowance. 20 TB on every plan is the single most generous quantified bandwidth allowance among credible cloud providers. Overage at €1/TB is trivial.

Developer tooling. hcloud CLI, mature REST API, first-class Terraform provider, Cloud Console UI that respects developer workflows. Snapshots, block storage, load balancers, floating IPs, private networks — all API-driven and cheap.

Operational track record. Hetzner has run cloud infrastructure since 2018. Independent developer usage is close to a decade. Consistent quality, no notable trust incidents in the modern era.

EU jurisdiction and GDPR-friendly defaults. Data lives in Germany or Finland. Simpler than juggling US privacy laws for European customers.

Real hardware. Modern CPUs (Intel Ice Lake, AMD Ryzen/EPYC), NVMe storage on every plan, real 1 Gbps ports. Not a shared-hosting product dressed as cloud.

Weaknesses

No managed services. No managed Postgres, no managed Kubernetes, no functions. Self-hosted only. If you'd want to terraform apply a managed database next to your VPS, Hetzner isn't your provider.

Limited region coverage. Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki (EU); Ashburn, Hillsboro (US); Singapore (APAC). No LATAM, no Middle East, no US-Central, no South-east US, no Sydney/Tokyo. If your users are outside this footprint, latency will hurt.

Support is ticket-based and unhurried. No 24/7 chat at the entry tier. Tickets take hours. Fine for planned work, painful for incidents.

Smaller ecosystem. Fewer CI systems have first-class Hetzner deploy actions. Fewer marketplace one-click apps. Fewer tutorials on Stack Overflow tagged specifically to Hetzner.

Payment friction. Hetzner does credit checks for European customers and can require prepayment for accounts outside EU. Non-EU customers occasionally hit account activation delays.

No object storage yet. Hetzner announced object storage in 2024 but it's still limited-availability. If you need S3-compatible object storage, use Backblaze B2, DO Spaces, or Cloudflare R2.

Hidden costs

Backups. Automated backup costs 20% of the plan price. CX22 backup: $0.92/mo. Real but small.

Additional IPv4. IPv4 costs €1/mo per additional address beyond the one included. Sane.

Snapshots. €0.011 per GB-month. On an 80 GB storage plan: about $0.88/mo per snapshot. Cheapest snapshot pricing in the market.

Load balancer. €5.83/mo (~$6.30). Cheap. Not needed for single-instance apps.

Block storage. €0.052 per GB-month. Adding 100 GB of block storage: about $5.20/mo. Half of DigitalOcean's rate.

None of these add up to anything material for a typical developer workload. Hetzner's total-cost story is honest.

What you should NOT expect

  • A polished managed-hosting experience. Hetzner is pure IaaS. If you want managed WordPress or managed Postgres, use a different provider on top.
  • Instant global CDN. Add Cloudflare or Fastly in front for global performance.
  • US enterprise-style hand-holding. Hetzner is efficient, not fluffy.

Who Hetzner is genuinely right for

  • Indie developers and bootstrapped startups watching costs.
  • Small businesses running WordPress, Django, Laravel with technical staff.
  • Self-hosted stack enthusiasts running Nextcloud, Vaultwarden, Immich.
  • Small game server communities where 20 TB bandwidth matters.
  • CI/CD operators who need cheap sustained-CPU boxes.
  • Anyone building on EU jurisdiction for regulatory reasons.

Who Hetzner is NOT right for

  • Enterprises with strong US-domiciled-vendor requirements.
  • Global consumer apps needing LATAM/APAC/Middle East regions.
  • Teams that want managed services (Postgres, K8s, functions).
  • Non-technical operators who need managed hosting.
