Cheapest way to host a website in 2026 (honest guide)

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

Every "cheapest hosting" article recommends the same $3/mo Bluehost intro rate that becomes $18/mo at renewal. This guide gives the honest answer: what the cheapest legitimate hosting options actually are, when free is genuinely free, and when "cheap" costs more than a few dollars a month would.

Prices as of 2026-09-22.

The five-second answer

  • Static site (blog, personal page, portfolio): free on Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, or Netlify.
  • Small dynamic site (WordPress, small SaaS): Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo.
  • Personal / hobby dynamic project: Fly.io free tier (256 MB), Vercel Hobby, Cloudflare Workers.
  • Pure "throw it up and forget it" hosting: UpCloud Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo — cheapest sticker, but bandwidth is metered.

If your site is static: the answer is a free static host. If your site is dynamic: $4.60 Hetzner CX22 is the honest answer for real production; free tiers work for hobby projects.

Free options that are actually free

Static sites

  • Cloudflare Pages — free tier: unlimited requests, 500 builds/month. Ideal for React, Next.js static export, Astro, Eleventy, Hugo. Global CDN included.
  • GitHub Pages — free for public repos, custom domains supported. Slower rebuild than Cloudflare but bulletproof.
  • Netlify — free tier: 100 GB bandwidth, 300 build minutes/month. Comparable to Cloudflare.
  • Vercel Hobby — free for personal use. Excellent Next.js support. 100 GB bandwidth, 100k function invocations.

For a personal blog, portfolio, resume, or landing page: you should not pay for hosting. Use one of these.

Dynamic apps (with caveats)

  • Fly.io free tier — 3 shared-CPU 256 MB VMs, 3 GB persistent storage, 160 GB egress. Real dynamic apps on the free tier work at small scale.
  • Cloudflare Workers — 100k requests/day free. For serverless-model apps.
  • Oracle Cloud Free Tier — 4 ARM64 instances (24 GB total RAM). Genuinely generous but often out of stock in popular regions.

Free tiers work if you fit. Watch for the specific quota that will bite you first (usually bandwidth or function invocations).

Under $5/mo paid options

Shared hosting: DO NOT recommend

  • Bluehost, HostGator, GoDaddy, SiteGround — advertised at $3-6/mo intro; renewal at $14-25/mo.

We do not recommend shared hosting. See our editorial on the affiliate incentive.

Cheapest legitimate VPS

  • UpCloud Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo — cheapest sticker. Metered bandwidth is the catch: $0.056/GB.
  • OVHcloud VPS-1 at $4.54/mo — 2 vCPU / 4 GB / 40 GB / port-limited "unmetered."
  • Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo — 2 vCPU / 4 GB / 40 GB / 20 TB. Best value in the category.
  • Vultr Regular 1 GB at $5/mo — 1 vCPU / 1 GB / 25 GB / 1 TB.
  • AWS Lightsail 512 MB at $5/mo — 2 vCPU / 512 MB. Bandwidth overage is dangerous.

Hetzner CX22 at $4.60 is 4x the RAM of Vultr's $5 plan and cheaper. This is the correct answer for anything above hobby scale.

The "free but not really" trap

Some "free" options end up costing more than paid:

  • Google Cloud Platform Free Tier. Free for a year with credit; then billed at full GCP rates.
  • AWS Free Tier. Free for 12 months of an EC2 t2.micro. Data transfer overage is separate and can generate surprising bills.
  • "Free" shared hosting with ads. The ads are worth less than $2/mo. You're paying with your visitors' attention.

For real production: pay $4.60 for Hetzner. Save yourself the surprise.

When the cheapest option is actually right

Static personal site: Cloudflare Pages, free. There is no cheaper option and no reason to use anything else.

Hobby dynamic project: Fly.io free tier or Cloudflare Workers if it fits.

Small production site with real users: Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo. Better value than every free tier for real workloads.

WordPress with real traffic: Cloudways DO 1 GB at $14/mo (managed) or Hetzner CX22 self-hosted.

When cheapest isn't right

  • Business-critical uptime. Save a few dollars, lose a customer.
  • Traffic uncertainty. UpCloud's metered bandwidth burns cash on a viral post.
  • Compliance requirements. Free tiers don't have SOC 2.
  • Your time > $50/hr. Manage a Hetzner yourself and you pay in time, not dollars.

Which one you should actually pick

  • Static site (blog, portfolio, landing page) → Cloudflare Pages, free.
  • Personal dynamic project → Fly.io free tier or Oracle Cloud Free Tier.
  • Small production site → Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo.
  • WordPress site with real traffic → Cloudways DO 1 GB at $14/mo or Hetzner + DIY.
  • Cheap Windows workload → Contabo Windows VPS at ~$12/mo.
