Akamai Cloud (Linode) in 2026: strengths, weaknesses, hidden costs
Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.
Akamai acquired Linode in 2022. In 2023-2024 the product was rebranded "Akamai Cloud" though the Linode UI, name, and developer experience largely persisted. In 2026 the product occupies a slightly awkward middle ground — priced close to DigitalOcean, positioned as enterprise Akamai-adjacent, with the original Linode developer-first flavour partially preserved. This is the pricing analysis.
Prices as of 2026-09-22.
The one-paragraph verdict
Akamai/Linode is priced identically to DigitalOcean at every tier and offers roughly the same value. Where Linode wins is the Akamai edge network integration (relevant for larger workloads) and a slightly cleaner admin experience. Where it loses is the ecosystem depth vs DO and the ambiguity of a company that's now enterprise-focused serving developer customers. For a small workload, this is a coin flip vs DigitalOcean. Pick DO for stronger docs and community; pick Linode if you want smaller-shop feel or specific Akamai integration.
The plans
| Plan | Price | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nanode 1 GB | $5/mo | 1 | 1 GB | 25 GB | 1 TB |
| Linode 2 GB | $12/mo | 1 | 2 GB | 50 GB | 2 TB |
| Linode 4 GB | $24/mo | 2 | 4 GB | 80 GB | 4 TB |
| Linode 8 GB | $48/mo | 4 | 8 GB | 160 GB | 5 TB |
Plus dedicated CPU, high memory, and GPU tiers.
Every price above is $1-2 cheaper than DigitalOcean's Basic tier at the same specs.
Strengths
Slightly cheaper than DigitalOcean at every tier. Nanode 1 GB at $5/mo vs DO Basic 1 GB at $6/mo. Small but consistent.
Akamai edge network integration. Native integration with Akamai's CDN, image/video optimization, and edge security services. Relevant if you plan to use those.
Cleaner default admin panel. The Linode Cloud Manager is genuinely nice — arguably the best pure-VPS admin UX among the major providers.
Object storage. Linode Object Storage is S3-compatible and priced competitively.
Managed Postgres, MySQL, Kubernetes. All present, though at prices that are somewhat higher than DO's equivalent (e.g., Managed Postgres 1 GB at $60/mo vs DO's $15/mo).
Better regional coverage than in 2019. Linode has expanded regions post-Akamai acquisition, now covering ~20 datacenter locations.
Weaknesses
Managed database pricing is punitive. Managed Postgres 1 GB at $60/mo is 4x DigitalOcean's $15. This is by far the biggest reason not to build on Linode if you plan to use managed database.
Documentation is behind DigitalOcean's. DO's community tutorials are the industry standard. Linode's are competent but shallower.
Ecosystem partners are thinner. Cloudways, Forge, most managed-hosting layers default to DO. Linode is supported but as a second-class option.
Community narrative is confused. The "we're Akamai now, but also still Linode, but priced for developers, but we serve enterprise" positioning is not clarifying. This is a real drag on community mindshare among indie developers.
Support quality is inconsistent. Some users report excellent support; others report longer response times than pre-acquisition Linode. Variance is real.
Hidden costs
Backups. 25% of plan price (higher than DO/Vultr's 20%).
Managed database. 4x DigitalOcean's pricing — see above.
Snapshots. Free up to a per-plan limit; beyond that, priced per GB-month.
Bandwidth overage. $0.005-0.01/GB depending on region. Friendly.
Load balancer. $10/mo. Competitive.
Where Akamai/Linode is genuinely right
- Existing Linode customers with runway. No reason to migrate away.
- Workloads that specifically benefit from Akamai edge network integration.
- Buyers who prefer Linode's admin UX and slightly cheaper Droplet pricing.
- Someone who wants to be on a "not DigitalOcean" that isn't Vultr.
Where Linode isn't
- Managed database workloads — DO is 4x cheaper.
- Ecosystem-first developers — DO's ecosystem is deeper.
- Cost-first buyers — Hetzner is cheaper for what you get.
- Cloudways users — the Cloudways-on-Linode option exists but is uncommon.
Which plan you should actually pick
- Nanode 1 GB at $5 — light workloads, hobby projects. Vultr Regular 1 GB at $5 is a coin flip.
- Linode 2 GB at $12 — matches DO Basic 2 GB exactly.
- Linode 4 GB at $24 — matches DO Basic 4 GB. Slightly cheaper storage but no material difference.
- Linode 8 GB at $48 — matches DO Basic 8 GB.
There is no scenario where the price advantage over DigitalOcean drives the decision by itself. Pick Linode when the specific reasons above apply.
