Vultr in 2026: strengths, weaknesses, hidden costs (pricing analysis)
Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.
Vultr is a cloud VPS provider that has been operating since 2014 with roughly the same positioning as DigitalOcean but with wider regional coverage and slightly cheaper prices. This is the pricing analysis — where Vultr wins, where it doesn't, and the small hidden costs that don't show on the pricing page.
Prices as of 2026-09-22.
The one-paragraph verdict
Vultr is the developer-first cloud VPS with the widest regional coverage and the best High Frequency single-thread performance at its price point. At the $5-40/mo tier, Vultr consistently undercuts DigitalOcean by $1-8/mo for identical specs. The gap between Vultr and DigitalOcean has narrowed on documentation and ecosystem, but DO still wins there. Buy Vultr for cost, regions, or High Frequency CPU. Buy DigitalOcean for ecosystem or docs. Buy Hetzner for cost when you can host in EU or a small US footprint.

Vultr High Performance (AMD EPYC)
Similar structure at slightly higher prices. Best for compute-heavy multi-thread workloads.
Vultr Bare Metal
Single-tenant dedicated hardware from ~$120/mo. Not covered in this review.
Vultr Cloud GPU
A100, L40S GPUs available at real prices, provisioned in minutes. Worth checking for ML inference.
Strengths
~30 datacenter regions worldwide. Vultr has Warsaw, Delhi, Osaka, Mexico City, Manchester, Melbourne, Stockholm, Seoul — regions DigitalOcean and Hetzner don't. If your users are geographically dispersed, Vultr's coverage is the differentiator.
Cheaper than DigitalOcean at every direct comparison. Regular tier: $1-8/mo cheaper per plan than DO Basic. The gap is meaningful at scale.
High Frequency single-thread performance. Vultr HF instances run on 3.7+ GHz Intel Xeon Cascade Lake and later. Geekbench 6 single-thread hits ~2400 vs DO Basic Droplets at ~1500. For CPU-bound synchronous workloads (PHP without OPcache, unoptimised Django, Rails), the wall-clock difference is 25-40% per request.
No IPv4 fee. Vultr includes 1 IPv4 in the base plan and offers additional IPv4 at friendly rates.
Better GPU line. Cloud GPU (A100, L40S) available at real prices with fast provisioning.
API and CLI maturity. vultr-cli, mature REST API, first-class Terraform provider.
Managed Postgres and Managed Kubernetes. Vultr caught up on managed services in 2023-2024. Prices comparable to DO.
Weaknesses
Documentation is weaker than DigitalOcean's. DO's tutorials have a decade-long lead on Linux systems questions. Vultr's docs are functional but shallower.
Marketplace is smaller. DO Marketplace has ~180 curated one-click apps; Vultr Marketplace has fewer and updates less frequently.
Support has less brand goodwill. Vultr's ticket support is competent but doesn't have the community reputation DO has built over the years.
Cloudways runs primarily on DO, not Vultr. If you plan to move to a managed WordPress layer later, running on DO from day one is simpler.
Managed database is newer. Vultr's managed Postgres works but lacks some of the maturity (backup schedules, PITR features) of DO Managed Databases.
Hidden costs
Backups. 20% of plan price. Regular 4 GB backup: $4/mo.
Snapshots. $0.06/GB-month. An 80 GB snapshot: $4.80/mo.
Bandwidth overage. $0.01/GB — friendly. A 1 TB overage costs $10.
Managed database HA (standby). ~50% additional.
Load balancer. $10/mo starting. Cheaper than DO's $12.
Cloud GPU pricing. Priced by the hour; check the calculator for your workload.
Object storage. Vultr Object Storage is competitive but not always the cheapest — Backblaze B2 is cheaper at scale for pure storage.
Where Vultr is genuinely right
- Global consumer apps where regional coverage matters.
- CPU-bound synchronous workloads (Vultr HF is the winner at ~$6-12/mo entry).
- Cost-first developers who can't or won't use Hetzner.
- ML inference at moderate scale (Cloud GPU is worth the look).
- Windows workloads — Vultr's Windows Server licensing is straightforward.
Where Vultr isn't
- Absolute cheapest hosting — Hetzner (EU/US) and Contabo beat Vultr on raw price.
- Managed WordPress — Cloudways runs mostly on DO, not Vultr.
- The best documentation for beginners — DO's community tutorials still win.
- The best ecosystem depth — DO has more first-party managed services and more third-party integrations.
