UpCloud in 2026: strengths, weaknesses, hidden costs (pricing analysis)

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

UpCloud is a Finland-based cloud VPS provider that has been operating since 2011. They compete with DigitalOcean, Vultr and Hetzner on the developer-friendly IaaS end of the market and pitch themselves on storage performance — their MaxIOPS distributed storage is genuinely one of the fastest in the category. This is the pricing analysis.

Prices as of 2026-09-22.

The one-paragraph verdict

UpCloud's differentiator is MaxIOPS storage — legitimately faster than most competitors' SSD/NVMe options for random-read-heavy workloads. Their base plan prices are surprisingly aggressive at the entry tier ($3.24/mo for Starter 1 GB — the cheapest sticker on any cloud VPS we track). The problem: bandwidth is metered from the first GB out, at rates comparable to AWS Lightsail's overage. For any workload that moves real data, the "cheap" sticker turns expensive fast. Buy UpCloud when storage performance is the bottleneck; buy something else for cost-first.

The plans

Plan Price vCPU RAM Storage Bandwidth
Starter 1 GB $3.24/mo 1 1 GB 10 GB MaxIOPS metered
Starter 2 GB $6.48/mo 1 2 GB 20 GB MaxIOPS metered
Starter 4 GB / 2 vCPU $12.96/mo 2 4 GB 30 GB MaxIOPS metered
Starter 8 GB / 2 vCPU $19.44/mo 2 8 GB 40 GB MaxIOPS metered
Starter 8 GB / 4 vCPU $21.60/mo 4 8 GB 40 GB MaxIOPS metered

UpCloud also runs higher tiers (General Purpose, High CPU, High Memory, Developer). See upcloud.com/products/pricing for those.

Strengths

MaxIOPS distributed storage. UpCloud's storage is genuinely one of the fastest cloud storage products at the developer-VPS price point. Random-read-heavy workloads (databases, caches under high load) see measurably better latency than DO Basic Droplets on comparable specs.

Aggressive entry-tier price. Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo is the cheapest sticker price on any cloud VPS we track. Vultr Regular 1 GB is $5. DO Basic 1 GB is $6.

Real developer tooling. REST API, CLI (upctl), Terraform provider. All present and reasonably mature.

European jurisdiction. GDPR-friendly defaults. Data lives in Europe primarily (plus a handful of non-EU regions).

Object storage available. S3-compatible; priced comparably to competitors.

Managed database services. Managed Postgres, MySQL, Redis available. Not the cheapest in the market but present.

Weaknesses

Bandwidth is metered from the first GB. UpCloud does not include a bandwidth allowance in the base plan. Every GB of outbound traffic is billed at ~$0.056/GB. For a site doing 100 GB/month, that's $5.60 on top of the $3.24 plan. For anything bandwidth-heavy, this makes UpCloud significantly more expensive than the sticker suggests. This is the single biggest hidden cost.

Smaller region footprint than Vultr or OVH. UpCloud has ~10 datacenter regions, primarily in Europe (Finland, Poland, Germany, London, Amsterdam, Madrid), plus USA (Chicago, San Jose, NYC), Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo. Fine for most workloads; less than DO/Vultr/OVH.

Documentation is thinner than DO's. Not bad, just not as deep.

Community is smaller. Fewer Stack Overflow answers tagged with "upcloud", fewer independent tutorials.

Storage is faster than needed for many workloads. MaxIOPS is genuinely impressive but for CPU-bound or bandwidth-bound workloads, the storage advantage doesn't matter. You're paying for a differentiator you don't use.

Hidden costs

Bandwidth (as above). $0.056/GB from the first byte. A 100 GB/month site adds $5.60/mo to your bill.

Backups. UpCloud offers snapshots and backups; priced per GB-month, similar to competitors.

Additional IPv4. ~$3/mo per additional IPv4 address.

Managed database HA (standby). Extra ~50%.

MaxIOPS storage beyond plan quota. Priced per GB-month; you can add more.

Where UpCloud is genuinely right

  • Database workloads where storage IOPS is the bottleneck. MaxIOPS is real value.
  • Low-bandwidth workloads at cost-first entry tier. $3.24/mo for a real 1 GB VPS is compelling if you're not moving much data.
  • European users who want a Finland/EU-first vendor.
  • Developers who prefer clean docs and a modern admin UX.

Where UpCloud isn't

  • Bandwidth-heavy workloads. Metered bandwidth kills the cost story.
  • Regions UpCloud doesn't cover (large parts of LATAM, Middle East, Africa).
  • Ecosystem-first buyers (DO has more).
  • Cost-first buyers who need real data transfer — Hetzner CX22 at $4.60 with 20 TB included is vastly cheaper for anything above a hobby workload.

Which plan you should actually pick

  • Learning / very low bandwidth → Starter 1 GB at $3.24/mo.
  • Small database with performance sensitivity → Starter 2 GB or 4 GB, and consider the MaxIOPS advantage.
  • General web workload with real traffic → don't buy UpCloud; buy Hetzner CX22 at $4.60/mo instead. Metered bandwidth will hurt.
