OVHcloud in 2026: strengths, weaknesses, hidden costs (pricing analysis)
Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.
OVHcloud is Europe's largest cloud provider by revenue and one of the two cheapest legitimate cloud VPS options on the market (Hetzner is the other). This is the pricing analysis — where OVHcloud wins, where Hetzner is a better pick, and what OVH's "unmetered bandwidth" story actually means.
Prices as of 2026-09-22.
The one-paragraph verdict
OVHcloud is the answer when Hetzner's smaller region footprint doesn't cover you and cost still matters. At $4.54-23.37/mo for their VPS-1 through VPS-4 tiers, OVH prices are within pennies of Hetzner at every direct spec comparison. OVH has ~25 datacenter regions to Hetzner's ~6, better APAC/LATAM coverage, and a wider dedicated-server catalog. Hetzner wins on quantified bandwidth, developer tooling, and operational track record for indie developers. Pick OVH for global region needs or dedicated hardware; pick Hetzner for everything else.
The plans
| Plan | Price | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS-1 | $4.54/mo | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB NVMe | 250 Mbps port, "unmetered" |
| VPS-2 | $8.50/mo | 4 | 8 GB | 75 GB NVMe | 500 Mbps port |
| VPS-3 | $12.32/mo | 6 | 12 GB | 100 GB NVMe | 1 Gbps port |
| VPS-4 | $23.37/mo | 8 | 24 GB | 200 GB NVMe | 1 Gbps port |
OVH also runs a large dedicated-server catalog (Kimsufi at the budget end, So You Start mid-tier, Advance/Rise/Scale enterprise).
Strengths
Region footprint. 25+ datacenter regions worldwide. Notably includes São Paulo, Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo, Delhi, Mumbai — regions Hetzner doesn't cover. Global consumer apps that need APAC or LATAM latency should look at OVH before spending 4-6x more with DO or Vultr.
Cost per GB of RAM is competitive. VPS-2 at $8.50 for 4 vCPU / 8 GB is $1.06/GB of RAM — the cheapest RAM-and-CPU combined outside of Contabo. Hetzner CX32 at $7.60 is slightly cheaper still, but OVH has the wider region access.
Dedicated servers. OVH's dedicated line is enormous. Kimsufi from ~€5/mo for older hardware; So You Start mid-tier from ~€20/mo; Advance/Rise/Scale for enterprise workloads. If you need single-tenant hardware at reasonable prices, OVH has more choice than any competitor in Europe.
IPv4 included. Every VPS plan includes 1 IPv4 in the base price.
Longer operational history in Europe. OVH has run cloud infrastructure since the 2000s. Track record is real.
Weaknesses
"Unmetered" bandwidth is port-limited. VPS-1 tops out at 250 Mbps; VPS-2 at 500 Mbps; VPS-3+ at 1 Gbps. You can't go faster than the port. For most web workloads this doesn't matter; for video streaming or large-file distribution, it's a real ceiling.
Developer tooling is less polished than Hetzner's. OVH has an API and CLI but the UX is less developer-first. Terraform provider exists but isn't as mature. The admin panel is functional, not modern.
Customer support is variable. OVH's support model is optimized for enterprise customers; small-VPS customers often report longer response times than Hetzner or DO.
No managed services at the VPS tier. No managed Postgres, no managed Kubernetes at prices that compete with DO's $15/mo entry. OVH has managed Kubernetes but it's targeted at larger customers.
The 2021 Strasbourg fire. OVH's SBG2 datacenter fire in March 2021 destroyed customer data for a subset of tenants without adequate backups. Recovery was uneven. OVH has since invested heavily in fire suppression and geographic redundancy, and the operational lessons are internalised — but the incident is worth knowing if you're evaluating single-provider risk.
Hidden costs
Backups. Auto-backup add-on ~15-20% of plan cost.
Additional IPv4. Roughly €1.50/mo per additional address.
Snapshots. Priced per GB-month, similar to competitors.
Bandwidth beyond port limit. You physically cannot exceed the port speed. This is a soft "cost" — you pay in throughput ceiling, not in currency.
Public IP DDoS protection. OVH's basic DDoS protection is included; enhanced protection ("Game" or "Enterprise") costs extra.
Where OVHcloud is genuinely right
- Global consumer apps needing APAC, LATAM, or Middle East regional coverage.
- Dedicated server workloads at reasonable prices (Kimsufi, So You Start).
- EU-jurisdiction workloads with mixed European and non-European users.
- Cost-conscious VPS buyers in regions Hetzner doesn't cover.
Where OVHcloud isn't
- Absolute cheapest — Hetzner slightly beats OVH at the entry tier.
- Best developer tooling — Hetzner wins.
- Best support experience for small customers — Hetzner or DO wins.
- Best documentation for beginners — DO wins.
- Managed services ecosystem — DO, Vultr, or Linode wins.
Which plan you should actually pick
- VPS-1 at $4.54 — small workloads, regions Hetzner doesn't cover.
- VPS-2 at $8.50 — real production workload with 4 vCPU / 8 GB.
- VPS-3 at $12.32 — RAM-hungry workload or moderate database server.
- VPS-4 at $23.37 — data-heavy workloads, higher-throughput compute.
- Kimsufi dedicated — single-tenant cheap hosting for specific workloads (game servers, self-hosted email, media).
