Contabo to OVHcloud migration in 2026: same price tier, different trade-offs
Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.
Contabo and OVHcloud sit right next to each other on the cheap-VPS leaderboard. The migration between them is uncommon because the price delta is small, but there are two genuine reasons: OVHcloud's CPU consistency is better under sustained load, and OVHcloud's quantified port speeds are easier to plan capacity against than Contabo's "unmetered but shaped" bandwidth story.

Direct spec comparison
| Contabo | OVHcloud | Price delta |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud VPS 4 (4/8/100 GB) — $7.79 | VPS-2 (4/8/75 GB) — $8.50 | +$0.71 OVH |
| Cloud VPS 6 (6/12/200 GB) — $10.62 | VPS-3 (6/12/100 GB) — $12.32 | +$1.70 OVH |
| Cloud VPS 8 (8/24/300 GB) — $19.82 | VPS-4 (8/24/200 GB) — $23.37 | +$3.55 OVH |
OVHcloud is slightly more expensive at every direct comparison and has less storage at every tier. Contabo wins the sticker war. But sticker isn't the whole story.
When migrating to OVHcloud is the right call
- Sustained CPU workloads. OVHcloud's oversubscription is friendlier than Contabo's; performance is more consistent under load.
- You need firm capacity planning. OVHcloud publishes port speeds (250 Mbps on VPS-1, 500 Mbps on VPS-2, 1 Gbps on VPS-3+). Contabo shapes to ~200 Mbps under sustained heavy load without publishing the number.
- You want a wider datacenter footprint. OVHcloud has ~25 datacenter regions worldwide. Contabo has ~10.
- You need better peering to specific regions. OVHcloud's peering to APAC is measurably better than Contabo's.
When to NOT migrate
- Storage per dollar is the metric that matters. Contabo gives you 20 GB more at every tier.
- Your workload is bursty and idle most of the time. Contabo's oversubscription doesn't hurt you at low utilisation.
- You've already tuned your app for Contabo's quirks and it's working. Don't fix what isn't broken.
Step-by-step
Both providers are plain Linux VPS. Standard migration pattern.
1. Provision OVHcloud VPS
Sign up at ovhcloud.com. Pick the region matching your Contabo location as closely as possible.
2. Install stack
Straight copy from Contabo. Nginx, PHP, MySQL/Postgres, Redis — same apt commands.
3. Copy application and data
Standard tarball + pg_dump or mysqldump pattern.
4. DNS cutover
Standard.
5. Set up capacity monitoring
OVH's dashboard shows real port utilisation. Set alerts. You now have visibility Contabo didn't give you.
6. Cancel Contabo
Snapshot for insurance, cancel.
What you gain
- More consistent CPU performance under sustained load.
- Quantified port speeds for capacity planning.
- Wider datacenter footprint for global latency.
- Better peering to APAC and some other regions.
What you lose
- 20 GB of NVMe storage at every tier.
- ~$1-4/mo per instance in additional cost.
- The exact same admin panel workflow — OVH's UI is different (some prefer it, some don't).
