Best cheap Windows VPS in 2026: the honest options

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

Windows VPS is a smaller niche than Linux but a real one: Windows-only applications, .NET stack workloads, Remote Desktop for a specific SaaS, or a Windows-based development environment accessible from anywhere. Windows Server licensing is expensive, which makes the cheap-Windows-VPS shortlist much shorter than the Linux equivalent.

The one-paragraph verdict

Contabo and OVH offer the cheapest legitimate Windows VPS options at ~$10-15/mo for real 4 vCPU / 8 GB configurations with Windows Server licensing bundled. AWS Lightsail's Windows tier is priced similarly at the entry level and dramatically higher at scale. The main cost hidden on Windows VPS is not the plan — it's Windows Server licensing, which typically adds $5-25/mo depending on the provider. Buy Contabo for the cheapest sticker; buy OVH for a better quality-of-service; buy AWS Lightsail if you're already deep in AWS.

The plans

Windows VPS pricing at approximate 2 vCPU / 4 GB tier (the entry point for practical Windows Server):

Provider Product Approx price Licensing
Contabo Cloud VPS 3 Windows ~$11-15/mo included
OVH Windows Server VPS ~$12-18/mo included
AWS Lightsail Windows General 2 GB $17/mo included
DigitalOcean Basic 2 GB + BYOL Windows $12 + licensing separate
Vultr Regular 2 GB + BYOL Windows $10 + licensing separate

BYOL ("Bring Your Own License") is possible on Vultr and DigitalOcean but Windows Server licensing from Microsoft is $500+ upfront for a Standard license.

What Windows Server on a cheap VPS actually gets you

Windows Server 2019, 2022, or 2025 typically — the provider chooses the version, sometimes lets you pick.

RDP access. Standard Remote Desktop over port 3389. Change the port if you can; RDP on 3389 is heavily probed.

Basic IIS or a plain shell. Windows Server ships with IIS installable, PowerShell, and standard admin tools.

No Office, no productivity suite. Windows Server ≠ Windows 10/11 desktop. It's a server OS.

No GPU. Cheap Windows VPS plans don't include GPU. If you need Windows with a GPU (for GUI-heavy apps that use hardware acceleration), you're on a different pricing tier.

Where each provider is good

Contabo Windows VPS

  • Cheapest sticker in the category.
  • Licensing bundled.
  • All the Contabo trade-offs apply: aggressive CPU oversubscription, unmetered-but-throttled bandwidth.
  • Good enough for: RDP for development, small internal tools, Windows-only test environments.
  • Not good for: latency-sensitive Windows workloads, production apps with real users.

OVH Windows VPS

  • Slightly more expensive than Contabo.
  • OVH's network peering is friendlier for real users.
  • Better consistency under sustained load.
  • Good enough for: production RDP for small teams, .NET web apps, Windows-based tools.

AWS Lightsail Windows

  • Same price as OVH at entry tier.
  • The Lightsail bandwidth overage story applies — $0.09/GB overage in US.
  • AWS ecosystem integration (S3, RDS for SQL Server) works without cross-provider egress.
  • Good enough for: workloads that need AWS integration alongside Windows.

Common Windows VPS use cases

RDP access for a specific SaaS. Common for procurement software, industry-specific tools that only run on Windows. Cheapest option: Contabo.

Windows-only development environment. Access via RDP from any device. Cheapest: Contabo. Better UX: OVH.

.NET web application hosting. IIS + .NET runtime. OVH or Lightsail depending on scale.

SQL Server hosting. Windows Server with SQL Server Express (free) or Standard (licensed). Expect to pay for both. On AWS, consider RDS for SQL Server instead — often cheaper than self-hosting.

Game server for a Windows-only game. Some game servers require Windows Server. Contabo or OVH.

Hidden costs

RDP session count. Windows Server allows 2 concurrent RDP sessions by default (for admin). For more, you need RDS CALs — expensive.

Antivirus. Windows Defender is free and built in. Don't pay for third-party AV unless you have a compliance requirement.

Backup. Windows-specific backup solutions (Veeam, Acronis) cost extra. Most VPS providers offer snapshot backups at their standard 20% rate.

Windows updates. Consume RAM, CPU, and bandwidth. Schedule during off-hours.

Larger plans. Windows Server needs more RAM than Linux for the same workload. Buy 4 GB minimum for anything real; 8 GB is comfortable.

Where NOT to buy Windows VPS

  • Hetzner Cloud. Hetzner's cloud VPS is Linux-only. Their dedicated servers can run Windows but not their cheap cloud line.
  • UpCloud. Linux-focused.
  • Cloudways, Kinsta. Managed WordPress — not our category.

Which one you should actually pick

  • Cost-first, any Windows workload not latency-critical → Contabo Cloud VPS 3 Windows at ~$11-15/mo.
  • RDP for small team, production-ish → OVH Windows Server VPS at ~$12-18/mo.
  • AWS-integrated Windows workload → AWS Lightsail Windows General 2 GB at $17/mo.
  • You already have a Windows license and want to save → DigitalOcean Basic + BYOL — but only if the license amortises over years.
