Lowest cost per vCPU across 10 hosting providers in 2026

Cost per vCPU is a useful sanity check when you're comparing hosting providers, but it's a metric that lies more than it tells the truth. A "vCPU" on a Vultr High Frequency instance and a "vCPU" on a Contabo Cloud VPS deliver roughly 2x different amounts of actual computed work. What follows is the raw sticker ranking, then the honest interpretation.

What the numbers say

Contabo, Hetzner and OVHcloud dominate the top of the raw cost-per-vCPU ranking. All three sit at $1.77-$2.30 per vCPU at their most cost-effective plans. That's 5-7x cheaper per stated vCPU than DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr Regular or AWS Lightsail.

Vultr's Regular tier prices vCPU at $10. Its High Frequency tier is more expensive still on the raw metric but delivers faster single-thread performance to justify it. This is one of the cases where cost per vCPU is genuinely misleading — a $10 Vultr HF vCPU can do significantly more work than a $2 Contabo vCPU under sustained load.

Cloudways at $27/vCPU is not really about the vCPU. You're paying for the managed stack, backups, staging, and support. Comparing it on this metric is a category error.

The honest correction

Multiply the raw cost per vCPU by an "effective throughput" adjustment to get a fair comparison:

Provider $/vCPU (raw) Throughput factor* $/vCPU (effective)
Vultr HF (est) ~$6-10 1.5-2.0x ~$3-5
Hetzner CX $1.90-2.30 1.0x (baseline) $1.90-2.30
Hetzner CPX (AMD) $2.60-3.90 1.05x $2.48-3.71
OVHcloud $2.05-2.92 0.9-1.0x $2.28-3.24
Contabo $1.77-2.48 0.7-0.85x $2.08-3.54
Vultr Regular $5-10 0.9x $5.56-11.11
DigitalOcean Basic $12 0.85x $14.11
Linode $12 0.85x $14.11
AWS Lightsail $12-22 0.85x $14.11-25.88
UpCloud $3.24-5.40 1.0x $3.24-5.40

*Throughput factor is a rough estimate based on community-reported Geekbench 6 single-thread scores. Real workload results depend heavily on what you're running; use this as an order-of-magnitude guide, not a precise number.

Adjusted for real throughput, Hetzner is still the winner, but the gap between Hetzner and Contabo narrows considerably. Hetzner's consistency and better CPU-per-thread performance make its "cheap" $1.90/vCPU price more real than Contabo's "cheaper" $1.77.

When cost per vCPU actually matters

  • CI/CD runners doing sustained compile: cost per real vCPU (throughput-adjusted). Hetzner CPX or Vultr HF.
  • Video transcoding, ML inference: same — throughput-adjusted, and often GPUs are cheaper still.
  • Web app serving mostly I/O-bound requests: the number doesn't matter. Any of these providers will handle it fine; buy for the ecosystem, region and RAM instead.
  • Bursty workloads: buy the cheapest sticker with enough RAM. You'll be idle 90% of the time; oversubscription doesn't hurt you.

Which one you should actually pick

  • Cost is the only factor and workload is I/O-bound (typical web app) → Hetzner CX32 at $7.60/mo.
  • CPU-bound, cost-first → Hetzner CPX31 at $15.60/mo for AMD single-thread advantage.
  • CPU-bound, throughput-first → Vultr High Frequency at whichever plan fits your RAM.
  • Truly compute-heavy → not our category; look at bare metal or GPU providers.
