Cheapest cloud hosting for high-RAM workloads (16 GB and above) in 2026

Some prices quoted in this guide are out of date. It is being rebuilt on our price index; for current prices use the comparison pages, which show when each price was checked.

Memory-hungry workloads are where cloud VPS pricing gets uneven fastest. At 16 GB, the cheapest legitimate option is 4x cheaper than the most expensive. At 48 GB, the ratio widens further. This guide names the cheapest real option at every high-RAM tier and identifies when the cheap option is actually the right one.

Prices as of 2026-09-22.

16 GB tier

Not a standard shape at all providers. The closest matches:

Provider Plan Price vCPU RAM
Hetzner CX52 (est) ~$28/mo 8 32 GB (nearest bigger)
Contabo Cloud VPS 6 $10.62 6 12 GB
Contabo Cloud VPS 8 $19.82 8 24 GB
OVHcloud VPS-4 $23.37 8 24 GB
Vultr Regular 16 GB (est) ~$80/mo 6 16 GB
DigitalOcean Basic 16 GB (est) ~$96/mo 8 16 GB

At the 16-24 GB tier, Contabo Cloud VPS 8 at $19.82 (8 vCPU / 24 GB) is dramatically cheaper than Vultr, DO or Linode, which charge $80-96 for the same or less RAM.

24 GB tier

Winner: Contabo Cloud VPS 8 at $19.82/mo. 24 GB, 8 vCPU, 300 GB NVMe. Nothing else on the market undercuts this at the 24 GB tier for a normal workload.

Runner-up: OVHcloud VPS-4 at $23.37/mo. 24 GB, 8 vCPU, 200 GB. More consistent CPU under sustained load.

32-48 GB tier

Contabo Cloud VPS 12 at $35.40/mo. 48 GB, 12 vCPU, 400 GB NVMe. $0.738 per GB of RAM, the cheapest RAM on the market anywhere.

Hetzner CCX line (dedicated) — 32-64 GB dedicated shapes start around $30-70/mo depending on the SKU. Real dedicated hardware, no oversubscription. Verify at hetzner.com/cloud.

What high-RAM workloads look like

  • Large Postgres primary with wide shared_buffers (25-40% of RAM).
  • Elasticsearch or OpenSearch — RAM is the resource, always.
  • In-memory cache layer (Redis with several GB of cached data, Memcached).
  • ML inference where the model fits in RAM.
  • Game servers at scale (Minecraft with many players, ARK).
  • Video transcoding pipelines with heavy buffer usage.

When Contabo's cheap RAM is the right answer

  • I/O-bound workloads (databases, file servers, caches). The CPU inconsistency doesn't hurt.
  • Bursty workloads that are idle most of the time.
  • Storage-heavy workloads where the storage saving matters.
  • Cost-first anything at high RAM tiers.

When it isn't

  • Sustained CPU workloads (ML inference at real throughput, video processing).
  • Latency-critical databases where inconsistent tail latency loses you customers.
  • Regulated / SOC 2 environments where you need predictable performance under load.

For these, Hetzner CCX dedicated or bare metal beats Contabo cleanly.

Cost per GB of RAM at high tiers

Provider Plan RAM Price $/GB
Contabo Cloud VPS 12 48 GB $35.40 $0.738
Contabo Cloud VPS 8 24 GB $19.82 $0.826
OVHcloud VPS-4 24 GB $23.37 $0.974
Hetzner CX52 (est) 32 GB ~$28 ~$0.875
Vultr Regular 16 GB (est) 16 GB ~$80 ~$5.00
DigitalOcean Basic 16 GB (est) 16 GB ~$96 ~$6.00

Which one you should actually pick

  • RAM-hungry workload, cost-first → Contabo Cloud VPS 8 at $19.82/mo for 24 GB, or CVS 12 at $35.40/mo for 48 GB.
  • RAM-hungry workload, need CPU consistency → Hetzner CCX dedicated line.
  • RAM-hungry workload, need DO/Vultr/Linode ecosystem → pay the premium.
  • Storage plus RAM → Contabo dominates because their plans bundle more of both.
